Northern Lights Observatory

Did you know that Alta was once the base for Northern Lights studies? It is home to the Northern Lights Observatory, which is now a popular hiking spot here.
Located in the village of Kåfjord, the Nothern Lights Observatory was established in 1899 by Kristian Birkeland, who pioneered the scientific explanation behind the aurora borealis. It was functional in Alta till 1926, after which the observatory was shifted to Tromsø. The building then became a residential premise where many families lived, stories of whom still echo in the region. Today, this attraction is open for hikers and visitors with accommodation facilities. While much of the building was destroyed during World War II, the main structure still stands today due to restoration procedures. It is situated around 900 meters above sea level on Haldde mountain, thus making it a perfect spot for hiking and trekking trips with a lunch break atop the peak. The journey to the summit takes around 2-3 hours but guarantees spectacular views of the surrounding mountainous region.
